Earth
The element of nurture and grounding. Earth governs the Stomach and Spleen — the organs of digestion, of taking in nourishment and metabolizing it into self. When Earth is in balance, we feel held; when depleted, we worry and overthink.
In Classical Chinese Medicine, the human being is mirrored in the seasons. Each element governs an organ pair, an emotion, a sound, a taste, and a stage of life.
The element of nurture and grounding. Earth governs the Stomach and Spleen — the organs of digestion, of taking in nourishment and metabolizing it into self. When Earth is in balance, we feel held; when depleted, we worry and overthink.
The element of release and refinement. Metal governs the Lung and Large Intestine — taking in the precious (breath) and letting go of what is no longer needed. Out of balance: grief, holding on; in balance: dignity and quiet strength.
The element of depth, ancestral wisdom, and flow. Water governs Kidney and Bladder — our deep reserves, our willpower, our connection to lineage. Fear depletes Water; courage and wisdom restore it.
The element of growth, direction, and the strength that bends. Wood governs Liver and Gallbladder — the urge to grow, to plan, to expand. Frustration is its shadow; vision and benevolence its gift.
The element of joy, connection, and warmth. Fire governs Heart and Small Intestine — the seat of consciousness and the gatekeeper of what we let in. Mania or coldness in shadow; love and joy in balance.
